NEW YORK, January 20, 2004 — Joseph Berkery, President of Berkery, Noyes & Co., LLC, announced today that the firm represented The McGraw-Hill Companies in its agreement to sell its juvenile retail publishing business to School Specialty.

The businesses develop, produce, market and distribute supplemental education materials including literature, workbooks, teacher guides and manipulatives for pre-kindergarten through grade 8.  It owns copyrights to over 5,000 titles under leading imprints including: Instructional Fair, Frank Schaffer, Judy Instructo and Spectrum. The businesses, which are based in Columbus, OH, employ 260 people supporting annual revenues of approximately $60 to $65 million.

Berkery, Noyes specializes in investment banking for the information, publishing and communications industries. Among the most recent transactions completed by Berkery, Noyes are Taylor & Francis Group’s purchase of Marcel Dekker Inc., Pearson’s divestiture of Forum to Institute for International Research, ProQuest Company’s  purchase of SIRS Publishing, Inc., and SCP Communications, Inc.’s sale of Cliggott Publishing and The Oncology Group.
