NEW YORK — October 4, 2022 — Berkery Noyes, an independent mid-market investment bank, today released its third quarter 2022 mergers and acquisitions trend report for the Media and Marketing Industry. The report analyzes M&A activity during the first three quarters of 2022 and compares it with data covering 2021.
Total transaction volume in the first three quarters of 2022 increased by 11 percent over the first three quarters of 2021. Total transaction value decreased by 26 percent during this timeframe, from $190.9 billion to $141.1 billion.
M&A activity in the Marketing segment, which for purposes of this report excludes software-based transactions, increased 21 percent year-to-date over the first three quarters of 2021. One notable segment deal during the third quarter was Tremor International’s announced acquisition of Amobee, a global advertising platform, for $239 million. Amobee’s core services include its omnichannel demand side platform, advanced TV platform, and email marketing platform.
Transaction volume in the Internet Media segment declined 13 percent year-to-date over the first three quarters of 2021. Notable deals in the segment during the third quarter included Cox Enterprises’ acquisition of Axios Media for $525 million; and Penn Entertainment’s announced acquisition of Barstool Sports for $387 million.
As for other select industry sectors, the number of transactions in the B2B Publishing and Information segment increased 81 percent year-to-date over the first three quarters of 2021, from 66 to 112 acquisitions. Deal flow in the Exhibitions, Conferences, and Seminars segment more than doubled during this timeframe, from 18 to 45 acquisitions.
