NEW YORK — July 5, 2022 — Berkery Noyes, an independent mid-market investment bank, today released its half year 2022 mergers and acquisitions trend report for the Media and Marketing Industry. The report analyzes M&A activity during the first half of 2020 and compares it with the four previous six-month periods from 2020 to 2021.
Total deal volume in 1st Half 2022 increased 29 percent over 2nd Half 2021, from 466 to 603. Total deal value rose from $35.51 billion in 2nd Half 2021 to $135.50 billion in 1st Half 2022.
Volume in the Marketing segment, which for the purposes of this report excludes pure software-based companies, increased 43 percent in first half 2022. Notable Marketing transactions thus far in 2022 included a private equity consortium’s announced acquisition of The Nielsen Company, a global measurement and data analytics company, for $15.58 billion; Deloitte’s announced acquisition of PRGATE, a communications and consulting company with expertise in setting up brand strategies; and Capgemini’s acquisition of Rufus Leonard, a provider of design and experiential marketing services.
Transaction activity in the Entertainment Content segment improved 17 percent in first half 2022. Two of the top three highest value deals year-to-date occurred in the segment’s gaming sector: Microsoft’s announced acquisition of Activision Blizzard for $68.63 billion; and Take-Two Interactive Software’s acquisition of Zynga for $12.51 billion.
The number of acquisitions in the Internet Media segment gained four percent on a half year basis. Notable segment in first half 2022 included Carsales.com’s acquisition of Trader Interactive, an online advertising company serving the lifestyle vehicles and commercial equipment segments, for $809 million; and The New York Company’s announced acquisition of The Athletic, a subscription-based sports website, for $550.
Meanwhile, M&A activity in the Exhibitions, Conferences, and Events segment tripled, from 10 to 30 deals.
